Michael Fisch
Founder and CEO
American Securities

The University of Chicago Investing Forum is excited to host Michael Fisch for a keynote discussion. Michael is the CEO and founder of American Securities, a large upper middle-market private equity and buyout investment firm. Prior to founding American Securities, Michael was a partner in two private equity investment funds. Before entering the private equity industry, Michael spent time as a consultant at Bain & Company and at Goldman Sachs in the mergers and acquisitions department. Michael received a BA in Economics and Policy Studies from Dartmouth College, where he is a Member of the President's Leadership Council, and an MBA from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, where he has been a guest lecturer since 2006. Michael serves as a director of the 1162 Foundation, a member of the Atlantic Council’s board of directors and its executive committee, a member of the board of trustees of Northwell Health, and chair of the board of trustees of Princeton Theological Seminary.


Jason Mudrick
Founder and CIO
Mudrick Capital Management, L.P.

The University of Chicago Investing Forum is excited to host Jason Mudrick for a keynote discussion. Jason is the founder and Chief Investment Officer of Mudrick Capital Management, L.P., a firm specializing in stressed and distressed credit. Founded in 2009 with $5 million, the firm now manages approximately $3.2 billion primarily for institutional clients. After beginning his career in 2000 at Merrill Lynch's M&A Investment Banking group, Jason joined Contrarian Capital Management in 2001, focusing on distressed credit. He launched and grew the Contrarian Equity Fund to approximately $400 million before founding Mudrick Capital. Jason has served on numerous creditors' committees and boards of public and private companies. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Chicago and a J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he also taught economics to undergraduates. Jason was admitted to the New York State Bar.

James Morrow
Founder and CEO
Callodine Group

Mr. James Morrow is the founder and CEO of Callodine Group. Prior to starting Callodine, Mr. Morrow spent the previous 19-years at Fidelity Investments (FMRCo) where he managed multiple equity-income strategies. He announced his retirement in February 2017 and remained with the firm through January 2018 as he transitioned all portfolio management responsibilities to his successors. In his role as portfolio manager at Fidelity, Mr. Morrow managed a wide array of funds with experience structuring value-focused portfolios within equities, fixed income and specialty niches. He is an active manager with a history of managing portfolios with significant absolute and relative over/under weight positions, private investments and activist positions. Further, Mr. Morrow has experience recruiting, training and managing research teams. Before serving as an equity research summer intern with Fidelity in 1998, Mr. Morrow worked as a distressed debt analyst for Chase Manhattan Bank from 1995 to 1997. Mr. Morrow earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Chicago and his Bachelor of Science degree in finance from the University of Buffalo.

Nitin Saigal

Prior to founding Kora in 2014, Nitin spent eight years at Bridger Management, where he developed and managed that firm’s international research and investments across several emerging markets. He began his career at the Blackstone Group. Nitin was born and raised in India and received a BA from Harvard College and an MBA with High Distinction (Baker Scholar) from Harvard Business School.


Daniel Jacobs
Founding Partner
Kora Management

Prior to founding Kora, Daniel spent six years at Tree Line Advisors in Hong Kong, where he was responsible for the firm’s China research and investments, as well as research in ASEAN, India, and Japan. He began his career in the TMT investment banking group at J.P. Morgan in San Francisco. Daniel received a B.A. from Harvard College and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.


Daniel G. Sullivan
Executive Vice President
Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago

Daniel G. Sullivan is an executive vice president and executive director of the Chicago Fed’s Economic Mobility Project. His research has been primarily in labor economics, especially issues related to displaced workers and alternative work arrangements. Sullivan joined the Chicago Fed as a senior economist in 1992, after serving as an assistant professor of economics at Northwestern University. He also taught at Princeton University and is currently a lecturer at the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy. From 1994 to 2007 Sullivan led the Bank’s applied microeconomics group, from 2007 to 2019 was director of research and from 2019 to 2021 was director of economic outreach. He has published articles in leading academic journals including the American Economic Review, Econometrica, the Journal of Political Economy and the Quarterly Journal of Economics. He received a B.A. in mathematics from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University.

Will England
CEO and CIO
Walleye Capital

Will England is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of Walleye Capital. He joined Walleye in 2013 and was named a partner in 2017. Will plays an integral role in setting the strategic direction of Walleye and oversees all aspects of the firm’s processes, including strategy allocation, risk management, and talent recruitment. Will began his career as a Quantitative Researcher for the AHL division of London-based Man Group plc, researching and implementing algorithmic trading strategies across global futures and equity instruments. He also spent time as an investment analyst with Valor Equity Partners, a leading growth private equity firm. Will earned a BSE in Operations Research and Financial Engineering from Princeton University (Academic All-Ivy honors) and a Master’s degree in Mathematical and Computational Finance from Oxford University. 

Benny Peretz

Benny Peretz co-founded Greenoaks in 2012 and is a Managing Partner of the Firm. Prior to Greenoaks, Benny invested in public and private businesses globally with D. E. Shaw & Co., L.P. Benny holds a BSc in Economics from the Wharton School and BAS from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania.

Ted Seides
Founder
Capital Allocators

Ted Seides, is the founder of Capital Allocators, an ecosystem that includes podcasts, gatherings, and advisory to asset managers and allocators. He launched the Capital Allocators podcast in 2017. The show reached 15 million downloads in April 2023 and has been recognized as the top institutional investing podcast. Ted previously worked under David Swensen at the Yale Investments Office, co-founded and served as Co-CIO of Protégé Partners, made a famous bet with Warren Buffett, and authored two investment books. Ted graduated Cum Laude from Yale University and received an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Weijian Shan

Weijian Shan is the executive chairman and co-founder of PAG, a leading Asia-based and focused investment firm with more than USD50 billion in capital under management. Before joining PAG, he was a partner of TPG and co-managing partner of TPG Asia (formerly known as Newbridge Capital), and a managing director of JP Morgan. He was an assistant professor at the Wharton School, the University of Pennsylvania. He also worked at the World Bank. Shan holds an MA and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MBA from the University of San Francisco. Shan is the author of Out of the Gobi: My Story of China and America (2019), Money Games: The Inside Story of How American Dealmakers Saved Korea's Most Iconic Bank (2021) and Money Machine – A Trailblazing American Venture in China (2023).

Jeff Aronson

Jeff is the Co-Founder and Managing Principal of Centerbridge Partners, L.P.  Jeff oversees the Firm’s investment activities and serves as a member of the Management Committee. Jeff has been active in alternative investments, including private credit, private equity and real estate, for nearly 35 years. Prior to co-founding Centerbridge in 2005, Jeff was a partner at Angelo, Gordon & Co., where he led that firm’s distressed securities and leveraged loan efforts.

Before joining Angelo, Gordon & Co. in 1989, Jeff served as Senior Corporate Counsel at L.F. Rothschild & Co. He began his career as a securities attorney with the law firm of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP. Jeff is the former Chair and a current member of the Board of Trustees of Johns Hopkins University and also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of Johns Hopkins Medicine and New York University School of Law. He is a director and member of the Executive Committee of The Partnership for New York City. Jeff received a B.A., with honors, from Johns Hopkins University and a J.D. from the New York University School of Law.

Nicolas Giauque

Mr. Giauque joined Farallon in 1998, where he is Co-Chief Investment Officer, Head of European Investing, and a Partner. Prior to joining Farallon, Mr. Giauque worked in the investment banking and asset management divisions of Goldman Sachs for four years in Hong Kong and Singapore. Mr. Giauque graduated with a Master of Management from Hautes Etudes Commerciales.

Tim Hurd
President and CIO
BlueSpruce

Tim Hurd is the President and CIO of BlueSpruce, a long-biased fund which focuses on public equities in the business services, consumer, financial technology / asset management, healthcare, and TMT sectors.

Before starting BlueSpruce in 2013, Mr. Hurd spent seventeen years investing in private equities at Madison Dearborn, most recently as a Managing Director, where he invested in and served on the boards of numerous firms including PayPal, TransUnion, and Nuveen Investments. He began his career practicing M&A at Goldman Sachs. He holds an MBA from Harvard and a BA in Economics from the University of Michigan, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with Highest Distinction. 

Howard Marks
Co-Chairman

Since the formation of Oaktree in 1995, Mr. Marks has been responsible for ensuring the firm’s adherence to its core investment philosophy; communicating closely with clients concerning products and strategies; and contributing his experience to big-picture decisions relating to investments and corporate direction. From 1985 until 1995, Mr. Marks led the groups at The TCW Group, Inc. that were responsible for investments in distressed debt, high yield bonds, and convertible securities. He was also Chief Investment Officer for Domestic Fixed Income at TCW. Previously, Mr. Marks was with Citicorp Investment Management for 16 years, where from 1978 to 1985 he was Vice President and senior portfolio manager in charge of convertible and high yield securities. Between 1969 and 1978, he was an equity research analyst and, subsequently, Citicorp's Director of Research.

Mr. Marks holds a B.S.Ec. degree cum laude from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a major in finance and an M.B.A. in accounting and marketing from the Booth School of Business of the University of Chicago, where he received the George Hay Brown Prize. He is a CFA® charterholder. Mr. Marks is an Emeritus Trustee and member of the Investment Committee at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He is a member of the Investment Committee of the Royal Drawing School and is Professor of Practice at King’s Business School (both in London). He serves on the Shanghai International Financial Advisory Council and the Advisory Board of Duke Kunshan University. He is an Emeritus Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, where from 2000 to 2010 he chaired the Investment Board.

Steven N. Kaplan​

Kessenich E.P. Faculty Director, Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Steven Neil Kaplan conducts research on issues in private equity, venture capital, entrepreneurial finance, corporate governance and corporate finance. He has published papers in a number of academic and business journals. Kaplan is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and an associate editor of the Journal of Financial Economics.

Professor Kaplan co-founded the entrepreneurship program at Booth. With his students, he helped start Booth’s business plan competition, the New Venture Challenge (NVC), which has spawned over two hundred companies that have raised almost $1 billion and created over $10 billion in value including GrubHub, Braintree/Venmo and Simple Mills.

Steven Strongin
Senior Advisor, Goldman Sachs

Steve is a senior advisor at Goldman Sachs, where he advises the firm on a number of important client-facing initiatives. Previously, Steve was head of Global Investment Research for more than 12 years. He was a member of the Management Committee and Firmwide Client and Business Standards Committee. Steve was also co-chair of the Firmwide Technology Risk Committee. Additionally, he also served as global head of strategy research and co-chief operating officer of Global Investment Research, as well as global head of commodities research. Steve joined Goldman Sachs in 1994 and was named managing director in 1998 and partner in 2002. Prior to joining the firm, Steve spent 12 years at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, most recently as the director of Monetary Policy Research. Before that, he was an economist at the Center for the Study of Economy and State at the University of Chicago and a researcher at PanHeuristics, a think tank focused on military strategy and energy policy.

Steve is a distinguished visiting professor at the Pardee RAND Graduate School and a member of the Board of Directors of Ocean Conservancy. In addition, he is a member of the Advisory Council to the College at the University of Chicago, a member of the Jury of the World Resources Institute’s Ross Prize for Cities, and a member of the Becker Friedman Institute Advisory Council. Previously, he was a member of the Advisory Board of the RAND Center for Corporate Ethics and Governance. Steve earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in economics from the University of Chicago and a graduate degree in management from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
